I am so inspired when I meet someone who is truly going above and beyond, for the benefit of others and the greater good. Kids in regional areas of Australia aren’t always given the opportunities that exist in the cities and metropolitan areas. Nancy Pattison, entrepreneur behind Indii Swimwear is passionate about creating opportunities for kids in her local area of South West Rocks, on the Mid North Coast of NSW.
Last weekend the Saltsista Surf Session, an initiative driven by Nancy and supported by big hearted friends of hers, brought big smiles to the faces of local indigenous girls. I had a fantastic time photographing the session and afterwards I asked Nancy a few questions about SSS.
What was you motivation to start Saltsista Surf Session?
My motivation to have a Saltsista Surf event was to provide an opportunity for young Indigenous girls to have a fun day out learning about surfing and connecting with culture through language. I hope to do more of these events in the Summer.
What happened at the event?
The girls all received a free Indii Hat & Saltsista Rash Shirt, Trent Munro Surf Academy gave the girls a lesson in surfing and then the girls all went out to practice their skills. All girls picked up surfing quickly and seemed to have a fun day. After surfing a healthy lunch was provided and Aunty Cheryl did some Dunghutti language activities with the girls.
Where were the kids from?
The girls were from South West Rocks and Kempsey.
Who was involved in the event?
Indii Swimwear, Trent Munro Surfing Academy, Nourished Eats Produce provided lunch, and Alicia Fox Photography
How can other people get involved?
We would love to find some sponsors to help support this event. Contact Nancy at Indii Swimwear.
