I love discovering ethically focussed fashion brands, and I love even more when I get to meet the designers and photograph their lovingly-made clothing. Katrina Barker Designs is a ethical fashion brand based in Port Macquarie. Katrina is a passionate designer who spends up to half of each year in India and Indonesia, where she sources hand-made fabrics, clothing and jewellery.
Over the years she has volunteered on her travels teaching craft, design and jewellery making, providing women with a way to continue their traditional crafts while incorporating new skills. Katrina brings their beautiful hand-made products back to Australia for sale.
If you a regular follower of my blog posts, you’ll know that I am passionate about ethically produced fashion. The fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters, and “fast fashion” is a major contributor to landfill in Australia and other countries. In addition to that, most people are now aware of the unacceptable conditions that much of the mass produced fashion found in shopping malls, is made under. That’s why I encourage people to consider fashion made under ethical conditions.
It’s so wonderful to come across a designer who is dedicated to providing high quality, long lasting, timeless pieces of clothing, especially right here in Port Macquarie.
In addition to the photographs shot on location in the forest, we did a series of studio shots for Katrina’s new website, which she launched this week (very successfully, I hear). Check it out here: www.katrinabarkerdesigns.com
