Product & Flat Lay Photography

Palmers Australia commissioned me to shoot product and flat lay photography – a collection of 20 images for their international advertising platforms. The brief included both styling and photographing the bath and beauty products, which came very naturally to me because their branding style aligns closely with my own lifestyle – tropical, natural and fresh.

Posting The Products For The Photo Shoot

Palmers sent me a package of around 20 different products from their range of beauty and bath products. I was given full creative control to style and arrange the products however I thought would work best visually, within the brief and branding guidelines. This made it very easy for my client, as they could simply post the goods to me without having to put any additional time and energy into the photography.

Pre-Production

Before the shoot I sat down with the products and did photo research, searching online for image inspiration to suit the types of products and packages I would be shooting. I looked for ideas that were similar to my own style and included props that I use in my daily life. I gathered these props from around my home – body brushes, enamel bath, baskets, garden stool, towels and different timber for backdrops. I identified different plants from around my garden that I would collect on the day of the shoot – palms, aloe vera, daisies, cardamom, philodendron, papaya leaves and limes.

Then I made a shopping list of things I’d like to include but didn’t have on hand – natural soaps, additional towels, brushes and coconuts.

The Product and Flat Lay Photo Shoot

The day of the shoot was a lot of fun. I walked around the garden gathering the foliage and plants I wanted to use. I had all my props on hand and worked in different areas of my property using natural light, and chasing the shade. I called on my assistant, James to hold the reflector/blocker from time to time, or to hold a leaf at the right angle. I photographed in our rustic outdoor kitchen, the Balinese outdoor shower, in the bush and by the dam.
